Welch starts his memoir with a bang: sex, drugs, rock �n roll, and hitting bottom are all packed into his short prologue, launching the story of the rock star�s rise, fall, and subsequent conversion to Christianity. Unfortunately, Welch, the former lead guitarist of the hardcore metal band Korn, never quite gets back to the punchy, dramatic style that so vividly sets in motion what could be a fascinating read, but at times is more like a casual chronology of events�despite his willingness to curse and his rocker tone. The book�s first section is a catalogue of teenage rebellion (tormenting his brother, watching horror flicks, smoking pot), yet somehow lacks drama, and Welch can�t resist listing every single band he formed, played with, and left before finally making it with Korn. It�s not until Welch tells of a visionary experience �one that eventually leads him to Jesus�that this story gains momentum as a spiritual memoir. Fans of Noah Levine (Dharma Punx) may enjoy Welch�s hard-core tone, though be warned: Welch is now hard-core on Jesus, and he hopes this story "might save a lot of people from going down the roads of destruction that [he] traveled on."

Shooting Digital 2nd Edition

A digital camera is functionally identical to a traditional film camera in all respects except image storage, right? Not at all, and Mikkel Aaland shows exactly why in his excellent Shooting Digital. He shows why digital cameras--the point-and-shoot variety as well as fancier models meant for professional photographers--are overall neither better nor worse than cameras of older design, and goes on to show you how to take advantage of their special traits. He shows how to compensate for their shortcomings, too, notably shutter lag (for which he documents a useful testing procedure) and color fringing. Though there's some coverage of creating animated GIFs, this book generally sticks to shooting time and leaves editing to other volumes.

Aaland never forgets that digital cameras should be more cameras than digital, and his book serves as an excellent photography text for hobbyists and aspiring professionals. The author's advice in this area is both technical (how to light a still life and how to best a strobe to eliminate shadows) and artistic (why kids should be encouraged to photograph other kids, and how you can use perspective to create weird effects). He's an accomplished photographer who obviously loves his work, and his enthusiasm for making art with a camera--and, for that matter, just playing with one--come through brilliantly.

Although the 1920s and 1930s are often lumped together as the period �between the wars,� the two decades were quite different in character and styles of dress varied greatly.

The 1920s were the Jazz Age, a period of escapism after the horrors of World War I. The younger generation, especially, turned their backs on the formality and dark, buttoned-up clothing of the previous century. On both sides of the Atlantic, life was now fun, one seemingly endless party. With Europe still recovering from the war and repaying debts, the United States took the lead in new technology. Mass manufacturing made consumer goods cheaper and more accessible. New fabrics seemed to be invented every week - rayon, known as �art silk,� nylon, and many more.

In 1929, the Wall Street stock market crash brought the age of reckless partying to an abrupt end. The 1930s began with a widespread economic depression and unemployment and ended with the world at war again. It was a sober period, albeit with welcome touches of glamour for some.

This text brings together some of the most popular styles and dominant trends of the 1920s and 1930s and demonstrates how to achieve the look - from free-spirited flapper to Clark Gable look-alike. Some period pieces can still be found in thrift shops and secondhand sales. Others can be tracked down via the Internet, where auction sites often have vintage pieces selling for low prices. Other items you can make quite simply. Since the 1970s, there have been several revivals of elements of 1920s and 1930s fashions, and these more modern pieces make acceptable substitutes.

DADGAD tuning has been steadily growing in popularity since it was pioneered by Davey Graham in the 1960's; but if you're used to playing in standard, a transition means not just relearning the fingerboard, but a shift in the way you think. In particular, if you're a folk musician, it requires abandonment of the "What are the chords?" mentality, and a reorientation to the use of counterpoint and the drones that are so characteristic of Celtic music. In addition, for a finger-style guitarist, getting that characteristic DADGAD sound means rethinking the usual way of playing scales along the strings in favour of playing across them, in the manner that Bill Keith and Bobby Thompson innovated on the 5-string banjo.

We may conveniently divide the world of DADGAD into it's use with a plectrum/flatpick for back-up of dance tunes, and it's finger-style use -- either for more nuanced accompaniment, or for solos.
