In its third edition, this affordable guide to careers in the music industry provides updated information on 86 skilled and unskilled jobs for college, music school, and high school graduates. The jobs explored involve conducting, record producing, concert promoting, marketing, and disc jockeying, among other skills. Occupational titles within 12 thematic sections vary from music journalist, recording engineer, and business manager to tour coordinator and instrument repair and restoration specialist. The guide is organized along the lines of Barbara Sims-Bell's Career Opportunities in the Food and Beverage Industry (LJ 6/15/94), by the same publisher. Each two-page entry is introduced by a "career profile" and a "career ladder" containing ready-reference data with description; salary ranges; employment and advancement prospects; education and training; desirable experience, skills, and personality traits; best geographical location; unions and associations; and tips for entry. This work, which is arranged in no apparent order, would have been more accessible if alphabetized first by chapter and then by occupation. Useful appendixes include listings of college and university degree programs in music; related books and periodicals; and major industry players and organizations with names, addresses, and telephone numbers.
